Canada’s Lundin Gold has resumed operations at its Fruta del Norte gold mine in Ecuador, obeying strict biosecurity measures. It is currently processing some 2,800t/d of ore derived from stockpiles. In the next two months the company expects to reach around 3,500t/d.Production would gradually increase over the next three months, Lundin said in a statement, although it did not specify the volume.Lundin estimates that Fruta del Norte will produce 150,000-170,000oz of gold in the second half and 200,000-220,000oz in the full year, including volumes mined before the temporary closure of operations due to the pandemic. For the second half, the company calculates all-inclusive sustained costs of US$770-855/oz of gold sold. These costs include US$10.4mn in maintenance capital, including an increase of the tailings dam, buying mobile equipment for surface activities and projects to improve efficiency. The dispatch of gold concentrate for export will resume normal levels in the coming days, the company said.Fruta del Norte started gold production in 4Q19. It contains around 5Moz of gold and produced 51,320oz of the yellow metal in 1Q20.The mine is in the Amazon province of Zamora Chinchipe. Fruta del Norte and EcuaCorriente‘s Mirador mine are the only producing large-scale mines in Ecuador.
